She Moved from Connecticut to Texas and Built the Property She Always Wanted
by Quality Storage Buildings Team on March 20, 2026 at 5:36 PM

There's something about LaRue, Texas that surprises people: the hills. Gently rolling and tree-lined, they're rare for this part of the state. For Deborah, who moved from Connecticut, they felt like a quiet nod from a familiar place.
She had traded one beautiful piece of land for another. And she already knew exactly what she wanted to build on it.
Designing a Portable Cabin Studio in Texas: She Knew Exactly What She Needed

Back in Connecticut, Deborah had a dedicated quilting studio in her garage — a 14-by-32-foot space where she could work seriously on her craft. When she moved to Texas, that blueprint came with her. She knew the footprint. She just needed the right build.
Before finding Quality Storage Buildings, the family had already ordered a cabin from another manufacturer. It was there, but it wasn't the full picture. When they found us, the plan took shape: a 14×32 Dormer Cabin with a covered porch to serve as her studio, sitting right beside the existing cabin.
The challenge? Making the two buildings feel like one.
How to Connect Two Portable Cabins with an Enclosed Porch
Deborah and her son — a contractor who handled the interior finishing — looked at the open covered porch on the new cabin and saw a bigger opportunity. They enclosed it.

That porch became a bright, airy sunroom. And just like that, it became the bridge between the two cabins — a natural hallway connecting both structures without stepping outside. The whole property now feels like it was designed this way from day one.
It wasn't. That's what made it special.
Adding a Portable Garage to Match Your Cabin: Board and Batten Done Right
Right alongside the connected cabins, they placed a 14×32 Elite Portable Garage. Her son handled the full electrical package and converted the garage door to an electric opener. Deborah has one car — the rest works as storage, which on a Texas property is never a bad thing.

All three buildings are finished in the same cream-colored board and batten siding. The farmhouse look runs consistently across the whole property. Standing in front of it, you'd never guess it came together piece by piece.
Inside a 14×32 Dormer Cabin Turned Quilting Studio
Deborah lives in the original cabin. The new 14×32 Dormer Cabin is where she creates.
Walk inside and the dormer windows flood the room with natural light from above. Hardwood floors. A butcher block island surrounded by organized storage on every side. A quilted piece in blue and gold on the wall.
Deborah calls it a hobby. You'd call it a professional studio.

Outside, a pond sits quietly on the land. Hills in the distance. Three matching structures lined up just right.
She said "I wished I had found Quality Storage Buildings sooner."
We're glad she found us.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a portable cabin be used as an art or hobby studio?
Absolutely. A portable cabin shell gives you a dedicated, separate space away from your home — which is exactly what serious hobbyists and creatives need. Deborah's 14×32 Dormer Cabin is a perfect example: hardwood floors, organized storage on every wall, a butcher block island in the center, and natural light pouring in from the dormer windows above. Whether you quilt, paint, do woodworking, or run a home-based business, a cabin gives you a space that's fully yours — without the cost or permanence of a traditional addition.
What are dormer windows and why do they matter for a studio?
A dormer is a roofed structure that projects vertically from a sloped roof, with its own window built into it. On a cabin, dormer windows sit high on the roofline, which means natural light enters the room from above rather than just from the sides. For a studio or creative workspace, that overhead light is a game changer — it's consistent, it doesn't create harsh shadows across your work surface, and it makes the interior feel significantly larger than the square footage suggests. It's one of the reasons the Dormer Cabin is one of our most popular builds for studio and hobby use.
Can you connect two portable cabins together on the same property?
Yes — and it's more common than you might think. One of the most effective approaches is to enclose the covered porch between two structures, turning it into a sunroom or breezeway that connects both buildings. That's exactly what Deborah and her son did on their LaRue property. The result is a connected layout that feels like a single cohesive structure from the inside — even though the two cabins were built and delivered separately. If you're planning a multi-building property, we can help you think through placement and layout before you order.
Do you need a permit to place a portable cabin in Texas?
It depends on your location and how you plan to use it. In many rural and unincorporated areas of Texas, portable structures require little to no permitting — especially when placed on agriculturally zoned land. However, if your property is within city limits or a governed county, local building codes and zoning rules may apply. We always recommend checking with your local permitting office before placing any structure. Our team has worked with customers across Texas and can help you think through site and placement questions — just give us a call at (254) 687-9209.
Does Quality Storage Buildings offer rent-to-own or financing on cabins?
Yes — both options are available. Our rent-to-own program requires no credit check, just an initial payment equal to two months' rent to get your building delivered and set up. From there you make monthly payments for the term of your agreement, and the building is yours. If you'd prefer traditional financing, we offer installment loans through Hearth with rates as low as 4.99%, loan amounts up to $100,000, no prepayment penalties, and no home equity required. You can see your personalized payment options without affecting your credit score. Visit our Payment Options page to explore both.
